(putting this here, because even though it's job related, it's more geeky stuff).
I've spent a little over 3 years building up my career in my current company. In that time, I've gotten things where I want them from both a job and salary perspective. Plus, I have a nice expense account that pays for most of my toys :)
So, now that everything is just how I like it, I'm going to go to another company and start over :)
A friend I know through a Boston VC firm has started something interesting and has asked me to join him. So, I'm going to take a big pay cut, fuck up my commute, start working hard again, and build up another company/position.
The upside is that it's a no-travel job (at least for the foreseeable future). I don't mind not having to get on a plane every week, although there are certain on-the-road perks that I might miss...
Oh yeah, the product is a software-as-a-service thing, and it's all built/based on Windows technologies. But, I'm still bringing my MBP with me, there are some things I just can't deal with on a day to day basis, and Windows is one of them :)

| Wow, major life changes!
It definitely sounds like a great ground floor opportunity for you. Sometimes you need to challenge yourself to see if your still alive. I'm sure you'll make it work.
What does the current employer think of this situation?

| I'm sure saving $10,000 a month is the furthest thing from their minds right now! Good management is hard to find.
So, when is the big move?

| Good for you Dev. Having made a similar life-changing career move not that long ago I know what it takes to make a decision like that.
Sorry to hear about your allergy to Windows, but I smile when I read that and consider how I'm turning the crank keeping almost 2-million square feet of data centers turning that fine product out!
It sounds like a pretty good gig you're moving to. Congratulations! But you're really going to miss airport food - it's the best!

| Work is definately over rated.
Good Luck Dev and I have an idea for your first Venture. I've done the research and I'm certain it would be very succesful. I just need someone interested in investing. It's a concept I actually came up with myself. Right now I'm affectionately calling it "Terry's Early Retirement" But I would be willing to let the biggest investor have renaming rights as long as they stayed true to the original concept.
Let me know.

Yeah, we're building this sort of portal-on-demand concept. I'm hoping there is a market for it. If you know anyone with skillz, let me know.

|
What kinda skillz yu seekin'?
|
I'm pretty good at driving a concrete truck. Is that the sort of skill you need?
But I'll warn you, I'm only available one day a month, I don't travel, and I'll need at least $60K a year, after taxes.
