The first thing you need to do is determine if you have a computer problem or an Ipod problem.

I will assume you are using some version of Windows, hopefully XP or Vista.

Find another usb device and try plugging it into your PC. Try all the ports or until one of them responds. If that device seems to work when plugged into the computer, than the problem would appear to be in the Ipod. I can't help you with that.

If a second (or possibly third) device plugged into the PC's usb port does not work as expected, than you would seem to have a usb port problem on the PC.

Most pc's I have dealt with have at least 2 separate usb port controllers, meaning, if you have four ports, there are probably 2 ports each controlled by the 2 controllers. Each controller will have it's own driver installed. It would seem unlikely that both controllers and/or all four ports would fail at the same time. Most likely you would have a driver problem, although, having 2 drivers screw up simultaneously is also unlikely.

To possibly eliminate a driver problem, try shutting down and re-booting the system. Don't just do a restart. Shut down the computer and power it off completely, unplug the power cord if you aren't sure. Leave it powered down for a minute or 2, then restart. Before doing anything else try to plug in your test usb device to see if it now works. If it does, try the Ipod.

If the test device does not work you need to look at device manager to see if the drivers for the usb controllers are being installed and initialized correctly. That will require a re-post.

Ford the ipod screen read,"do not disconnect" when it's plugged intothe USB? If not the problem could be with the USB port or the cable.

Also, have you verified that itunes is set to automatically start up when it detects an ipod?

Plug something else into the USB port to see if it works.

iv had this problem b4. and it was much much simpler to fix than all that. check your cable and see if theres anything inside of it. have u been letting it just lay around. could be cluttered with dust and what not. check the port on your comp. dont stick anything into the port!!! if you stick anything metalic in there youl see some sparks. get a can of air duster and blow out the port and the usb cable, as well as the usb port on your ipod.

Some items can't be recharged from a USB port if the battery is too low or dead. Try recharging with the wall or car charger then try the PC again
