Im new to the site today, I have a 2000 Powerstroke 7.3 dually, I just put on a AFE intake, I am looking to build a 4" or 5" exhaust turbo back. The truck is stock, the only other power adder i will do is a TS chip, mabey later on. But for now just the exhaust. Will 4" be fine, is there that much increase with a 5". I have a 4" straight through muffler on now with the stock 3.5" pipe. Do I need to keep the muffler or can I straight pipe it. I have heard of power loss due to a straight pipe on a 7.3, is this true? thanks for any help.

If there is any change in power it will be a gain. The faster you can get air IN to a diesel the better off you are, the faster you can get the exhaust OUT of a diesel, the better off you are too. You'd only be helping it breathe better. The turbo on a 7.3 makes all the backpressure that it needs, anything else is just restriction>

The turbo system relies on backpressure to run and build boost and that 7.3 has a killer turbo set up on it...especially when you put the banks packs or bully dog packs and open it up...insane power.
That being said, anything after the turbo doesn't make much of a difference since the backpressure has been already built and released through the turbo. You can straight pipe it but if you're worried about loosing alot of back pressure, then stick with the 3.5" or 4" pipe. It's also significantly louder.

I have a 02 F-350 powerstroke crew cab long bed single rear wheel with a 4 inch lift and 33's. I have a 4 inch turbo back exhaust on my truck. I did keep the muffler that came with the kit on originally but I ended up taking it off. Honestly I did not feel any powerloss at all. Believe it or not it got quieter in the cab and a little louder at the pipe. I also have a ts 6 position chip on it. Mine is an automatic and the most they would give me is 100 horse do to the automatic. I have no complaints being I have beaten a few 4.6 and 5.0 mustangs. But if your putting a chip in I would definatly get some gauges in the truck. Mine are bully dog and on the pillar. The pyro alone has saved me many times from keeping my foot in it too long.
