The Wife finally convinced me to build and install some cabinets in the dining room.

This is where they are going:

Had to move everything out of the way, including that tall (pos HD) cabinet (the wife bought it, don't blame me).

Had to remove the existing heat register, cut out some wall board for access and plumb in the new kick space heating unit. Also had to relocate the left electrical outlet for the wine fridge. Will be adding one additional outlet above that and moving the right outlet up above counter top height. Still have to wire in the fan for the kick space heater.

Here we are with the first cabinet installed. You can see the kick space heater underneath. All the electric outlets are wired up, with GFI, and the Wife's stuff all put back in place, temporarily.

I had a huge piece of white oak sitting down in the basement for about 5-6 years. I was able to make all four drawer fronts for this cabinet from that one piece of white oak.

Just last week I got the second base cabinet finished and installed. This was a major pain in the ass. The patio door has vertical blinds, and a roll up window quilt, plus the valance over all of that. Everything had to be moved over about 1-1/2". It took longer to do that than it did to get the cabinet installed.

All three drawer fronts on this one were also cut from one 4x4 white oak beam that I re-sawed and edge glued into an 8" wide panel. The doors I got from my brother-in-law's neighbor. He was a professional cabinet maker. When he sold his house he told my BIL to take whatever he wanted from his shop. This is some of what I got for 'helping' him pillage.

That's it for now. Had to take this weekend off from that project to work on another knife drawer for my niece. She's getting married next weekend.

Wall cabinets next. Should be a piece of cake. We're going to put a nice wine bottle/glass rack in over the wine fridge, if all works out as planned.

Sorry to take up so much time with non-truck stuff.

I love it, one question for you.

Do you intend to make the surface over the wine cooler level with the counter top? Maybe a nice cutting block?

We have Corian counter tops in the kitchen. We are going to order a matching counter top for this section that will span the gap over the wine fridge. The wine fridge is just slid into place. When we move out of here, that fridge goes with us. It was a Christmas gift to me from my Daughter and Son-in-law. If I don't buy too much wine, I can fit an entire case of Sam Adams in there?

Very nice work, Mark.

I just bought 41.5 board feet of 8/4 Maple this weekend for an upcoming project: going to make new french doors for the bedroom to hold the stained glass panels my father-in-law made for us.

Cool. Where did you get the Maple? Got any pictures?

I am always looking for good sources.

No pictures yet. I got the lumber here: http://pjclbr.com/lumber.htm This lumberyard is literally 2 minutes from my house :) They have an awesome stock of hardwoods, as S4S, S2S and just raw dimensional. They also do custom milling, with over 300 knives to choose from, and will do custom or duplicate moulding for a (I think) $50 grinding fee, plus material, plus time.

Oh yeah, PJ Currier. I was there a couple of times a few years ago for, I think, some cherry boards.

How are their prices and selection? Do they let you pick through the piles to get what you want?

I have a current price sheet at home, I'll try to bring it to work tomorrow to scan and email to you.

And yeah, they let you pick through with no problems. I wanted some 8/4 maple lengths 5"-6" wide, and relatively straight for my project. I probably spent 40 minutes going through the 8/4 they had there to find to 4 pieces I wanted.

Excellent. I will have to check that place out again. I do prefer buying from local sources, if possible.

Thanks.

Their prices seem to be in line with what I have seen locally.

Highland Hardwoods, up in Brentwood is another good source. Their prices seem to be a little lower. They offer a 10% discount for purchases over 100 bdft. They also have a short bins section with pieces from 1 to 5 ft in length at a pretty good discount.

Brentwood is kind of a long drive, though. On the bright side, they are right across the street from Top Dog Truck Toys, Chris Rullo's place. He is the president of NH FTW.

PJ's had shorts for 50% off. Not much of a selection though.

I don't know what you mean by this "NH FTW" president thing.

I took some time off from this project to do some other things, including installing all the new stainless steel appliances that were given to us by LOML's brother.

Anyway, I finished off the first wall cabinet for this set and got it installed over the weekend. Used up 2 more of the doors from my BIL's neighbor. This cabinet is 30"x30"x12" deep.

Next is a very large wall cabinet for the other side, using up the three doors I have left. I have the carcass built and it is BIG. Standard 30" tall and 12" deep by 48-1/2" wide! I think I have found the practical limits of what size box I can build in my little shop. Had to glue this thing up in stages over the course of 3 days since I only have 4 50" Bessey clamps.

A little more progress to report. I finished off that 48" wall cabinet this past week and got it installed yesterday.

Just one more 17" space to fill between the 2 wall cabinets and this project is almost done. We just have to decide what to use for a counter top on the base cabinets. She wants Corian to match the kitchen. I want to spend less than the $850.00 that the Corian is going to cost!

Looks great! That's about the same color I want for my entertainment center and kitchen.

My opinion - spring for the Corian. You'll never hear the end of it if you don't

You know, if we were planning to stay here for another 10 years I would have no problem getting the Corian, but, we are hoping to move within the next year or 2. I would rather just make a nice oak top for the base cabinets. I think it would look fine since these cabinets are technically in another room.

If you're planning to move, even more reason to go with a premium countertop. Corian/Granite/Etc. is pretty much the norm in any decent priced house these days. Buyers expect a lot...
