I *like* Sirius, but I don't *love* it. It's better than FM for overall selection and no commercials, but it just sounds really compressed and limited to me. I kinda can't stand to turn it up very loud. Dunno if it's all to do with my tuner (Audiovox) or the service itself. From what I've read I think the audio quality is not totally related to the tuner, moreso to the actual audio stream.

I still enjoy the hell out of it, though. I just wish that I could turn it up more sometimes.

I have XM and really like the parts that I use. I listen to the comedy channel, the local news/traffic channel, and a bunch of the sports packages. I listen to music on occasion, and although it does sound clean, I have to agree with Brian that is sounds a little one dimensional compared to cds. It's fine for me-- I'm not a huge music snob or anything, so yeah-- I'd say I am totally satisfied with my sat radio. It's a very cool deal.

I have sirius also on two different recievers.

I can crank both of them Kenwood and Clarion and it is very clear, clean and crisp.

I think it is your audiovox.

Can't wait for Howard

I have XM although I can't remember the last time I actually listened to it.

The comedy channel is the only thing I really like, the rest of the channels are okay but they play too much stuff that i'm unimpressed with or I've never heard before

i had the xm roady system in mine, but canceld my subscription and took it out not to long after install, like said above the sound quality wasnt that great, almost like it had an echo to it, not sure what caused it and i didnt care to check into it since all i listened to was the comedy channel. so i soon will have one up for sale once i remove the fm modulator (or whatever its called)

Get sirius, the comedy channel is 100x as funny.

Honestly, the quality is CD quality. I guess like anything it depends on the quality of the receiver.

The more that I read about this, it seems that XM has a slight edge in sound quality, but that the bitstream itself is just too compressed in both cases to ever sound truly "good".

Certain channels get more compressed than others. Basically, the less "popular" the channel is, the more like it is going to be overly compressed. I mostly listen to 40,43,45,50 and 53 (I think 53 is the Soul Revue channel). I have a feeling the Top40/Rock stations would sound a little better.

I don't have any compression noise at all on my system. I can hear it in the mp3 player, but not the XM. My biggest complaint is the channels and their play list I still haven't found one that fits me as well as the free alternative here in Houston.

Also, with the external units, if you don't use a direct input or aux. input into your system, it will sound crappy... mine is CD quality with a direct FM modulator hooked up (into the antenna cable NOT wireless)... No complaints, but I think I could get a litle better quality if I had a direct input to the head unit.

I'm running line-in's on mine.

Technically they are not CD quality. In fact, they are roughly 1/2 CD quality. It's a difficult for a direct comparison, but CD's have an encoding rate of ~400Kbps, where Sirius and XM have an encoding rate of ~50-90Kbps (depending on the stream/channel). Both are using somewhat proprietary CODECS. But technically the streams aren't going to sound any better than a 96Kbps MP3.

I have Sirius and I can get great sound quality at any volume. I have a kenwood x678. I love it. Comedy, old school hip hop, dance, it's great.

I don't get any type of feedback, or static or anything like that either. My sound is crystal clear-- it's just one-dimensional, and somewhat flat sounding compared to CDs. My receiver is a Kenwood.

I haven't had much exposure to XM, but one of the friving motivations to go to Sirius was Howard Stern. Jim Breuer has a show on Raw Dog that's a riot also. I know XM has Opie and Anthony, and I was a huge fan when they were on terrestrial radio, but other than that, I'd go Sirius.

I want to go with Sirius ala Howard Stern & Nascar switching to Sirius, but Sirius needs to upgrade their technology to include a walkman type receiver like XM offers before I make the leap. My radio listening is done more in the gym than in the car or house.

I'm totally with you on that. They have that boombox adapter, but i'd love a truly portable unit.

Either system needs line-of-sight to the sky, unless you are in a really dense metro area and can pickup the terrestial broadcast. So, I wouldn't expect it to operate very well in a gym with either setup.

I think the way the XM unit works, and I may be wrong, but it records up to 5-6 hrs and then it's a playback or if you are in direct line with the satellite it will receive.

I get a bit of static every once in a while, but I blame it on the FM Modulator. If I were to hardwire, I think it'd go away.

Anyone else find it odd that if you don't have a Satellite ready radio, that the best option, reception-wise, is to use a cassette adapter? That's what it said in the instruction manual, anyway.

they hsve some new systems that are smaller and have a modulator box that plugs into the antenna wire and blocks the fm signal so you don't get the interference from the fm signals. i put one in my wifes toyota and it sounds good. i have four sirius recievers and they sound good they just broadcast with to much bass.
