Hey all, i jusy picked up a 1993 Honda Civic DX for a commuter, i couldnt pass up the deal, i even knew it had a possible cracked head. So here i am asking for maybe some outside opinions on what may be wrong with the engine. It over heats within 15-20 minutes of driving, i mean the radiator is bone dry, then if you popthe hood, the water in the resivoir it liteally boiling. I replace the thermostat as a start to maybe see if it wasnt a cracked head. i have noticed the radiator fan isnt kicking on also. The warer isnt leaking, s it is burnig off somewhere?
ANY OPINIONS???

Also when it is running real hot, it starts to burn oil and kick it out the tail pipe BAD, i assume this is a seperate issue, but any opinions on this problem.

I can already see some responses coming to say just drop a new engine in it, that is a option for me, but if there are some smaller options i am game.

Thanks for ALL opinions

Fill up the radiator and reservoir tank, then add some Car-Go sealant. I had an old Chevy Nova I-6 and it sealed the headgasket right up. Just run it for about 20 minutes and you should be alright. Make sure and change your oil afterwards, because it probably has coolant in it at this point.

If it doesn't work, hey, you only wasted $6.99, right?

And about the fan, check the fuses first. Remember, start cheap, then work up to expensive.

This really isn't a commuter car is it? You're gonna use it for tightening the lugnuts on your Expy - right?

The head gasket is shot. Now assuming the head itself is still good you should be able to get that fixed for around 1200.00

There are some good head gasket type sealants that you can add to the cooling system however those are usually for small leaks and since it is apparent that the combustion chamber is blowing into the coolant thus the super heated water. It most likely will not seal.

As for the fans not coming on could be many things. Could be a bad coolant temp sensor could be a fan swicth could be a fan relay. You need to get the head gasklet issue resolved first.

I had a 91 with the 1.5 engine. I know that with hondas when the engines go, they go. They usually go with very high mileage, but when people dont maintain them properly they burn oil and dont last as long. I would say maybe just a new head is in order, that way you get the oil burning problem fixed as well as the head gasket assuming the block and pistons/rings are ok. My cooling fan didnt come on either, only the tiny one did, there was a big one that didnt. It was a fuse under the dash, but im sure that isnt your problem.

Tom ha ha I like your idea, the car is so small it scares me, but hey 11 mpg doesnt cut it in the Expy.

Thanks for all the input fellas, sounds like the head is the major issue. I think i may have scored another engine from a friend at work, the exact same one as i have now, i will find out tomorrow, and for only $200 for it, cant pass that up, he upgraded to a more powerful one for his civic, you know these kids now days....ha ha ha
