Hey folks, i just picked up a nice used 12gauge Winchester from a buddy i work with, my question is do i have to register this gun in my name or how does it work when you do a private party to private party sale. I know my 9mm is registered, i bought it new and they did all that with my backround check.

I think it varies by state?

I've never had to register a long-gun.

Just keep a copy of the signed bill of sale in your important papers.

What GE2 said will be good. But if you want to take it further go to a local gun shop and have them do a transfer for you. Most gun shops charge about 35 bucks, This way the gun will be registered with the ATF in your name.

You can still buy long guns here in OH without registering them, and you can find older handguns from private sellers who don't want to go through the trouble of having them registered.

I am a little paranoid about having all of the guns I own registered. I have this vision of the government someday showing up at the door to confiscate them so I like to have a few around that they don't know about...lol

I agree with Garry as a law abiding American the gov has no need to know what guns I have in my house other than the hand guns they make us register. and even that I have issues with .

I read a thread yesterday that had a handgun reference and someone said that by the second ammendment we should have the right to keep and bear arms, which he felt should include handguns, without registration. It was an interesting point.

Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.....
