Here's a picture of the truck I drove a couple days last week. Its not my assigned truck, but with any luck, I'll have a truck assigned to me by the end of the week or so...

This particular truck is a 1991 WhiteGMC Autocar. Volvo has something to do with it too, but I have no idea which company makes what part of the truck. It contains...

- Caterpillar I-6 diesel, 330 horse / 1300lb/ft (I think)
- 7 speed manual + low range, compound low, and compound 1st (10 forward speeds all together, only the 7 used for driving)
- RexWorks body (leans over in corners more then the McNeilus bodies)
- Onboard compressor, hydraulic system, and 125 gallon water tank
- Radio that works sometimes

I signed up for two Kenworths, hopefully I get one of them. They have 8 speed manuals and Cummins M11 engines (much nicer), and foot wells that my big feet actually fit in. Since I'm at the bottom of the seniority list, I'll probably get one of the Autocars, so I made my 3rd choice one that I know everything works in, although its pretty ugly.

So that's what I've been driving lately.

Thats cool, and if someone pisses you off, you can fill their front yard with left over 'crete (I'm glad I live at the opposite end of the country from you :) )

I would've expected more than 330HP, I guess it's more of the torque that matters?

Yeah, they only rev to about 2200 rpm at the most, so its all about the torque. Some trucks I shift at 1800, downshift at 1300, so there's only about a 500rpm usable range.

One problem I seem to have is remembering to use the clutch when I drive my fiancee's car. I don't think it hurts it any, since I don't grind gears, but she doesn't like it

And you'd be surprised what some idiots do. I don't mind people passing me all the time, I am slow in that thing afterall. But when I'm making a right turn and people, using the middle lane, turn right around me, that pisses me off. Some gal in a Honda almost hit me (laid on the air horn that time), and the same dude in a BMW did it to me twice when I was training. What some people won't do to save a few minutes.

At the risk of sounding sappy (and I haven't even been drinking!), I LOVE this job! I worked a night shift for my first time ever on Monday/Tuesday, and it was a blast. They're doing a major project on I-5 in Everett, redoing some of the interchanges, and I poured a footing for one of the offramps. Nothing major, but in 20 years when I drive by, those two footings will still be there. I've never had job satisfaction like this, its kinda scary!

And today for the first time in my life, I was actually disappointed that I didn't get to go to work. We're having some snow here (not sticking most place, but us Washingtonions are pussies about snow), and people are cancelling, so I got cancelled. It wasn't even about the money (although that sucks), I just wanted to go in. Is this normal?!

Normal? For you - no.

Regarding Washingtonians being snow pussies - agreed. However, I'm not scared of driving in bad weather. Went through Snoqualmie pass this morning through the thick stuff and I'm about to turn around and go back through it again! Woof!

Mort, what you're describing is job satisfaction. Good for you!

It's probably about precipitation in general. If you don't have the setup to keep things dry while it sets you're wasting your time pouring.

Glad you're digging it.. I'm sort of jealous. I always wanted to drive a mixer.

Mort -

You should fill that bitch with tequila and margarita mix, and THEN show up on the jobsite. You could make a fucking killing!
