I'm hearing horror stories about the newer 6.0s. I'm looking to purchase my first diesel rig (2004 F-350). Any recommendations pro or con? I like the truck, but I have associates that say it's a dog on the lower end. I'll be pulling a 5th-wheel and don't need any towing pains.

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

I have an 05 6.0 with 30k miles, pulled a 20' enclosed to florida and back, no problems. The early '03s had some problems, but so did the 7.3's when they first came out.

I would get an Oasis report on the 6.0 before you purchase it.

The 6.0's are usually hit or miss...they either are trouble free, of full of trouble...

The known issues with the 6.0's are:

Blown Head Gaskets
Lifting heads
Leaky or stuck EGR Valve

The VGT helps with the low end spool up of the turbo, so yeah, it is a little gutless on the low end, but if you get an auto, the TX should help it spool faster.

I have a 04 and 06 6.0.
Both do fine. Only had my 04 in the dealer once for some module or something related to the VGT.

Heaviest I've ever towed with either one was 10,000lbs....never had any issues.

I have to agree with Dr. Speed. The 6.0L are very much hit & miss. I run the truck shop at a Ford dealership & I have seen both ends of the spectrum. I can run an Oasis report on the vin number if you can get it for me. That would be your best bet.

The 03s are mostly miss, the 04s are equal hit or miss, and the 05 and later are mostly hit.

The thing about the 7.3 that I like better is that they still run like brand new for a long time. I drove brand new ones, and a bunch of old ones, and if their taken care of, you can barely tell the difference unless you look at the odometer. The same isn't true with the 6.0. The older they get, they just don't have that certain something. I may be imagining things, but I worked for a dealer for a long time, and have driven a bunch of them.

I own a 2005 F350 6.0 Diesel with 25,000 miles and have never been in the dealer for anything. This is my best truck I have ever owned.

the 03 were problems..yes..it was more then just blown headgaskets and the typical EGR crap.

HOWEVER all and i say ALL of the 6.0 are prone to the same problems..blown headgaskets or a bad egr cooler or oil cooler

BUT..the 6.0 problems are curable..some ARP studs and deleting the EGR cooler and you will be set for many many trouble free miles.

Like Denny said..get an oasis..

I love my 6.0
