Okay, here's what I need...

In my new job, I'm required to find different places every day. They issued me a Thomas Guide, but I'll find the place on the Thomas Guide, sort of plan my route, then totally forget what I looked at. So, I'm thinking of getting a GPS for the work truck.

- Must be totally portable: something I can plug into a cigarette lighter only and take home at night.

- Must be relatively inexpensive.

- Turn by turn is good, voice is not required.

- Even if it were just a Mapquest-like thing, not necessarily satellite based, it'd be fine.

So what are your recommendations? Price is very important, since I'm not making a lot of bucks at the moment.

Garmin is the way to go. They're a little expensive though around a grand.

Mort...I have a Garmin Nuvi 360....it was around 740 bones. I know you wanna stay cheap but these in car nav GPS's aren't cheap. I would also think that you'd want voice prompt.....it would, IMO, be a royal pain in the ass to drive and follow a screen without voice. Miss your first exit and you'll throw it out the window. Check Craigslist for a used one.

Thats a tough one Mort......Whens your B-Day? We can all send you 10 bucks and you could get what you want

Edit: Check out the Garmin StreetPilot "i" series......fairly inexpensive and IMO a great little GPS to do what you want plus voice.

I have used Delorme's Street Atlas USA on a notebook computer for years. If you have a notebook PC available you can get the software and a GPS receiver that plugs in to the usb port for $99.95.

Delorme has also come out with a stand alone GPS unit for $369.95. I haven't used one, but that seems to be a pretty good price.

Mort, I got a Garmin Streetpilot i330, and workd great. You should be able to pick one up for about $400. and works great.

Another option ois the i2 series, black & white. Shoudl be able to pick one of these up for like $200, only problem is you have ot load the aps and such, and you can't get the whole U.S. stored on it, but if your in state all the time, you should be fine.

Good luck!!!

There's always the option of going with a Verizon cell phone with nav. Not sure of the price but I'd bet it's cheaper than going the GPS unit way.

Tom, I'd thought of that since I have a Verizon phone that's VZ Navigator capable, but I downloaded a trial version and couldn't get it to work right. Maybe I'll try again.

Thanks for the advice, guys. My birthday isn't until July, but thanks for the offer!

I may take a look at those Garmins. I'll be within an hour or so of home base all the time (concrete is only good for about two hours before you have to pour it out), so maybe I'll take a look at that i2. I don't know that I need all the bells and whistles, just something that will help a little.

I think I'm going to remember that Garmin Quest ebay deal. That looks like its right up my alley. All the features I need, plus its very portable, which will be great because technically anybody can jump in any truck (including mechanics, fuelers, other drivers, etc.) so I can take it home every night with me.

I also like that a brand new in the box one was $259 buy-it-now.

Thanks again, fellas.
