Whilst not the ugliest car from the 50's... definately not the prettiest either.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/23/buried.car.ap/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

(example 1957 Plymouth Belvedere)

TULSA, Oklahoma (AP) -- Organizers of a coming-out party for a buried 1957 Plymouth Belvedere could use some help.

The car, which was buried in brand-new condition under the lawn of the Tulsa County Courthouse in 1957, is scheduled to be unearthed June 15 as part of the Oklahoma Centennial.

Promoters are looking for people who helped lower the car into its crypt in 1957 to perhaps shed some light on what to expect when the car is unearthed.

There's speculation the car may have turned into a pile of rust. Or that it's in pristine condition and worth thousands of dollars.

I am still trying to figure out how it could have possibly IMPROVED while buried.

I love the '50's body styling of most vehicles from that decade. Body lines, fins, chrome, big bumpers.

there's no way...animals/shit would have crawled or grown inside the tail pipe, etc

wouldn't the glass break from all the weight of the dirt? how deep down was it...plus any rumbles under the earth

Yeah... I'm figuring that unless it was wrapped up in an XXXXL Trojan before burial... It's toast.

They didn't just cover the thing in dirt, its sealed in a box of some type. I was reading about it earlier. I believe its a concrete box.

I gather from reading the article that it's in a big steel box. Ie: it's not buried like a dead cat with dirt just thrown on top of it.

I'm guessing it won't be in all that great of shape, but will probably be serviceable with minimal effort.

Mike, Nope never owned one.

I had 3 50's cars.

My first was a 54 Mecury flat head. I lowered the front about 6 inches and the rear 4 inches leaving it with a slight rake. Put 57 Dodge spinners on it and had wheel well lights.

My Second was a 55 Oldsmobile. I made this into a show vehicle. Lowered the front with a spindle kit. Painted it a cadillac Teal color. Had complete tuck and roll upholstery in the same Teal color. Had the first set of reversed chrome rims in LA on it. Built the motor myself from the crank up with a Esky Cam, 1.5 Rockers, 1300 cfm 4 barrel, B&M stick Hydro tranny. Painted the engine candy blue. Customized the Grill.

My Third was a 59 Fuel Injected Corvette with 4 on the floor and traction masters. Left it stock and it did the quarter mile at 104 miles per hour.

The 50's was the best decade of my life. We were living "American Graffiti". We had car clubs all over Los Angeles like "The Road Kings" (still alive), Gesters, Saints, Gents, Ambassadors, Rod Benders, I was in a club called The Caliphs. Cruising Bob's Big Boy and street racing on Van Nuys Blvd and I still think the cars in the fifties had the best styling. You could look at a car then and tell what year and make the car was. Cant do that anymore.

I love cars from that era! Some were so ugly that you just had to appreciate that someone would design it that way - and that people would buy them!

Anybody else notice that the Belvedere has a German license plate? Munich, to be precise.

I'm wondering what they were spraying on it? I would bet unless that was some kind of sealer its rusty, we have pits like that at work to hold valves and pipes and the pipes are always rusty.

Ya , they preasure sealed it to. New oil all that stuff. All they have to do is add a batt and fire it up. The whole car was rebuilt before burial and fresh off the lot.. I read another artical that had the process's they used and shows the tomb and all the plastic and stuff around it. It's also full of other stuff from that time.
