I have a 2001 mercury mountaineer 5.0 v8 i have just installed a mac cold air intake kit and a flow master 40 series exhaust but the performance is not wjat i thought it would be before i installed the flowmaster the cold air intake had alot of get up in it then i installed the flowmaster and all that went away i was told by the installer that i needed to get the fuel system cleaned but i don't know if that has anything to do with the air flow system iwas told by a automotive parts store that the air flow had to be recalibrated to the more air flow that was coming in so if anybody can help me i would appreciate it thanks

Its possible that you used to large of pipes in your exhaust system. This would make you loose torque and the only place you would gain it top end. Like 5500 rpm up.

If you create a little more back pressure youll get your power back.

you probably don't have enough back pressure now which can result in a loss of torque. You might be able to get around it with a recalibration but i think you need to add more back pressure.

edit: lol... exactly what greez said above

I dont know if its one of those urban legends or not, but I have always read that you need to reset the computer after you do a modification so it can adjust for the increase in airflow....Just disconnect your battery, and turn on the headlights for a few minutes, supposedly that will drain the system and reset the computer and allow it to compensate and give better performance. But who knows if that will do any good or not, it definitely could all be BS just passed on as facts like so many things are. But it cant hurt to try, it will only take a few minutes.

I don't know if that's the problem or not i called flowmaster and i iam using the proper pipe size that is to be used on my application so how would i imporove my back pressure if that is the problem iam real frustrated with this could it have something to do with my mac air intake it seems to be working because you can hear the air going through the filter could it have anything to do with the fuel system needed to be clean the throttle body is dirty that would prevent all the air from goiing through if iam correct. I still think the computer needs to be recalibrated because i have modified the engine air flow system. so if anybody can found some answer to my problem i would appreciate any advice thanks.

First off, how many miles does your rig have, and how long has it been since you've changed the fuel filter, plugs, and wires? Sometimes a performance problem is as simple as a clogged fuel filter, so look for the cheap stuff first. I've found when people first try to modify their vehicles, they over think it.

Hey Chris!

I agree - this is a fairly common issue and is more often than not a result of too little back pressure. You've traded low-end torque for high-end power. It's the low-end that you feel with the seat-of-your-pants-o-meter.

I would also suggest that you might be expecting too much from those two mods. Those, alone, will not pin you to your seat.

Regarding the resetting of the computer - you can reset it as described above by 99XLTon20s or just drive it. The computer is constantly changing it's parameters. It will 'learn' the new operating parameters of running with an intake and the new pipes.
