| One thing you can do is to swap out your differential gears to something a bit higher (lower numberically). That will do two things; engine will run slower at highway speeds and; you'll lose a chunk of your low-end torque. If your rig is a 4x4 you'd need to do it front and back. That would be the least expensive way to do it.
By the way - welcome to the Blog!

| I'm sure there is a 4 speed tranny that would fit into your truck. The big trick will be finding one that isn't computer controlled and that has the same bell housing. This will allow you to keep your current gears and still turn the motor at slower RPMs at highway speed.
NOrmally, what you will find is a 3 speed tranny with overdrive. Think of this as a 4 speed tranny. All the "overdrive" unit is is something that makes the output of the tranny turn faster than the input (ie, a ratio of less than 1). Hope this helps to clear up some of the confusion.

| Thanks for all the help. Another question though: When I drive my truck after it's been sitting for a while (say three or four hours) the truck will sometimes slip out of gear. For instance, I'll be at a stop sign and I'll start to go and the truck will either shift into neutral and I'll just rev the engine trying to go and it will eventually kick back in after I play around with it for a while, or I will start off and then it won't shift out of first gear and into second. It doesn't happen between second and third, only first and second. | |

| | Oh another thing I forgot to mention. The transmission just barely got redone about three months ago after I blew it towing some concrete around. It's also a 2WD truck too. | |

| Sounds like a modulator issue or something else intrernally with the hydraulic system that is causing it to feel like its out of gear.
For that era you're probably looking at a C4 or C6 both of which don't have OD. So Tom's suggestion is probably your best bet.

| | There are literally millions of F-series trucks built with 4-speed automatic transmissions, and a few of those have found their way into junkyards. Get the tranny, the mounts, and the driveshaft from a truck that has the same cab/bed/engine configuration as yours, and it should drop right in. I'm assuming you have either a 460 or 351W, so an E4OD would be your best bet. | |
