Hey guys.

Last week I picked up a Reese 5 1/2" drop 2" ball mount for my stock receiver. My only problem is the thing rattles around in the receiver.

I pulled a 6x8 utility trailer upstate last weekend and the noise and vibration travels througout the truck.

I don't understand why 2" isn't exactly 2". It should be a snug fit so the ball mount doesn't warp - in my eyes at least. How can you have a class IV hitch with a loose mount?

Is there anything I can do to get this addressed? I am pulling up a quad this weekend and want to see if I can fix it.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

I didn't have any issues with my hitch on my old F-150 or F-250. Sounds like you need to get a different brand. It should be snug, with very little play.

When in doubt, McGyver it... duct tape solves everything.

I was actually just going to cut some shims out of 1/4 steel that I have, but I don't want them to fall out. I may break out the welder tommorow and weld them on the sides of the ball mount.

Maybe I will stop by U-Haul and see if their fits better. (Although I think Reese makes theirs too)

But I just bought a regular lock for the same price...

Sounds to me like your ball is the wrong size.

If you can shim it up with 1/4" steel scrap, then there is a definite problem. Maybe your trailer requires a 2-1/16" ball?

I don't know, but it shouldn't be loose enough to cause that kind of vibration.

My 11" drop bangs around when nothing is on it. But once it's loaded it's quiet.

That thing wouldn't help me anyway... Mines solid.

Mike, Pops hitch step came with a plastic wedge. You stick on the shank after it's in the first time. It puts pressure on on it so it doesn't bounch.

Mark, my ball is the size specified on the trailer sticker. It couples fine.

It's more of what Ed is saying. The "male square" that the ball is mounted to rattles around in the "female square" on the truck.

I didn't notice it much when I was pulling up the 52" commercial cut double blade lawnmower, but when it was empty she was vibrating - naturally.

It just doesn't seem correct - which is why I posted.

My dad's is snug, but his is all OEM down to the ball mount.

like Chris said, you can duct tape it, but that's temporary, and the adhesive will make a mess.

Have a welder put a bead on the top edge of the square tube...that should stop the rattle by filling in the gap.

Otherwise, return the hitch, and get another one...that one is definately wrong.

We have Draw-Tite receivers on our trucks which is the same as you describe Tek. As soon as it's loaded the rattling stops so you have nothing to worry about. Roll up you windows and turn the radio on.....quit crying.

What about just getting some foam fubber and cut a piece out and fit it inside the female part on the hitch where you have to push in the male part of the hitch in. So it will put it in a bind so it dosen't rattle.

I did that to a couple of my friends truck. Work great.

Both my pintle hook and ball mounts both rattle when empty, but with about a thousand pounds on them not a peep, it just needs more weight on it.

Bryan,

I have done that on hitch plugs before, I guess it's worth a shot.

Once again, the rattle wasn't bad when the trailer was empty, but I did feel the slack. Loaded she was great.

I have the same problem with our 05 Expedition, ironically though I am using the exact same hitch that I used on the 02 F-150 that we traded in on the Expi and it fit snug in the truck receiver.

It is definately a strange problem with the new hitches I guess.

Maybe they are 2 1/4 inches?

You always want to check your balls and your reciever before you go for the long haul.

You last two guys made me laugh my ass off. Tek, my reciever is the stock one and all my hitches are reese, except for one I made myself. None of 'em rattle, and with a trailer they're still solid, up to a point....lol....I had one reese piece snap a couple years ago with a 15,000 pound load, that's why I built a replacement on my own.

I never had this problem on any of my trucks, but it did happen on my Astro van, to correct it all I had to do was put a weld weld bead on each corner of the ball mount running the length of it. Then I used an angle grinder to grind it to a snug fit. Hope this helps.
