I'm surprised, inthis day and age of DRL equipped cars, that the folks at the gates don't know that already.

Perhaps a chat with the desk sergeant asking why you're being yelled at for something out of your control?

Regency Lady what base are you at? I agree with what Tom said, they can not give you any crap about them. All you have to do is say "day time running lights" and they can not say another word to you. If they do and they want to right you up or keep you at the gate, ask to see the on duty supervisor. If you still get a ticket, just go see your First Shirt and explain to him about the DRLs and it should be a dead issue and I would think you would not loose any points of your base licence. If you do and you want to take it further go see the legal office and I am sure they can get it all cleared up. I hope this helps, Just a Truck loving NCOs point of view.

Well I still would ask for the on-duty supervisor if they give you grief and want to write you up. Are you at Little Rock, If so shoot me an email through here I have a question for you.

I'm not sure if you can disable DRL without affecting overall headlight use.

I suppose you could shut off the engine and coast in?

I bet there's a fuse, if not they could always be disconnected.

Trish,

You have a few options:

1) Be humble, explain you are aware you should turn off the lights when approaching, and did, but your vehicle has day time running lights you cannot turn off.

2) Ask for the Flight Chief if you feel you were treated unfairly.

You didn't get a ticket, but since the baracks lawyer went that route lets assume you recieved a ticket and look at those options:

1) Same as item #2 above. Most likely it will end here...you did nothing wrong.

2) Go to your First Sgt, explain your situation, and let him know you would like to submit a rebuttal. You will need to contact the Security Forces Reports and Analysis section who can explain the rebuttal process to you. The citation will then go to the Chief, Security Forces and he will make a determination regarding the citation.

This particular violation would assess 4 points against your base driving privileges if:

1) There is a posted sign advising motorists to turn off their headlights when approaching the gate, and

2) It is written into your base traffic code.

That said, you have no control over the factory design of your vehicle and there is no expectation for you to modify your vehicle.

This is simply a situation whereas the gate guard isn't familiar with your vehicles design and either lacks the experience to see this objectively or is perturbed after being blinded by the 100 motorists before you that could have turned their lights off. Neither is a justification for the behavior, rather the reality of how one falls victim to one-dimensional thinking.

this is most likely a dumb question, but why do you have to turn your lights off on base?

Kyle, the folks manning the guard posts at military bases request that you turn off your lights sothey aren't blinded when they go to check your car's permit and the driver's id.

There has to be a relay for them some where. If anyone has a shop manual for your vehicle they could find out. (It may even say in your owners manual) For Fords that are build for Canada use ( but sometimes get into the U.S. they have the relay on the right side behind the front bumper, you just pull out the relay and tape up the socket and away you go.

I am sure Chevy has a similar set up.

Since DRL's are not Headlights (try driving off base with just them on) they can bitch all they want. Factory equipped, not an option, fight them the whole way.
