More rain around here means I get to spend more time making sawdust.

This was a a real easy project. I made the whole thing from one 16' pine 2x10. This piece is for my brother and matches a set I made a few years back consisting of two deck chairs and two matching tables. The plans for all of these pieces came from Wood magazine.

I am going to to apply some primer to this before I deliver it to my brother down in Connecticut. All of the other pieces were painted up real nice and I am sure this one will get a similar treatment.

Nice work. You should make another out of teak.

I thought of maybe making one out of cedar or white oak. Why do you suggest teak?

For outdoor stuff teak is more durable. Not to mention, with my nautical background, teak also has a dear place in my heart.

Isn't white oak too pourous for outdoor stuff?

I never worked with teak before. I'll have to give it a try.

White oak is wide grained and a little poruos on the end grain but still a pretty good choice for outdoor furntiure for a porch or patio. I wouldn't use it for lawn furniture that sits directly on the ground because it will wick moisture. It's naturally water and insect resistant and weathers nicely. It is also pretty much maintenance free even with no finish.

Nice work Mark. I love building suites of furniture. Out here, I'd be using redwood (sealed) or Douglas fir (painted).

If anyone is interested, the plans for this birdbath are available for free download from Wood Magazine this month. They have a different plan available each month on their web site.
