Not sure if you read the blog for yesterday but Banks is building a diesel road race truck that is being built to take on unlimited modified corvettes with a Duramax diesel motor. I thought a type R was just a sticker to add horsepower to Honda's

Check it out, there are some awesome videos that come wit the blog also

Check out the latest parts and accessories from Truck Hownd

sweet little truck, but I would expect a little more power than that from a "highly modified " TT duramax....still a cool ass truck though.

The Cobra added an "R" for one of its models. Must be for "Race" as everyone Ive seen is outfitted for racing.

yeah, they did a nice job on that cobra R...375 n/a hp 5.4 in a lightened up mustang makes a nice package.

I love all the little type-r stock 4 bangers running around, I think they kinda got away from the real meaning.

It seemed confusing while reading the information on the website but on the overview page of banks' website it said that 2500 rpm should be yielding the 650 horsepower and 800 lb. ft. torque, while the engine speed is capable of 5,000 rpm.

They said later that because they can make so much power at lower RPM's, the truck should easily be able to out accelerate and perform (fuel economy) than the regular gasser in the race. That's a massive advantage if you don't have to pit for twice as long as the rest of the field which begs the question, are the numbers low by design?

I don't think they ever mentioned the top power numbers, but in a road race with hard curves on asphalt, having 1300 lbs torque would probably hurt you. Watch the skid pad video, that truck has plenty (excessive) of power and torque.

That thing is pretty sweet, although it did look like it was loose in the corner.

for 650 hp, that torque number looks awfully low. those numbers look like gasser numbers. for a diesel, you should be putting out near 1300 ft-lbs.

Let me put on my geek hat:

TQ = (33000.0*HP)/(2.0*PI*RPM)

So, after putting it into Excel, the answer yields 1366 ft-lbs.

hmmm..they're 566 ft-lbs short.

Unless the torque peak occurs at 4300 rpm, at 650 hp. (that'd be more like a big block gasser.)

I'm not second guessing it's ability....someone just must have messed up the math somewhere downt the road.

Gale Banks makes a quality product, that's for sure. Now he's gotta go find the engineer who screwed up!

5000rpm is REALLY high revving for a diesel...the 6.0's redline at 4000 (they peak somewhere near 2800-3200), and the 7.3's redline at 3400rpm.

okay, i'm off my soapbox now....

Your making my head hurt

Yeah, Ford had 3 different Cobra R's over the years. '93 (5.0 Cobra, lightened, big brakes), '95 (5.8L pushrod, lightened), and '00 (5.4L DOHC, big body kit, bigger brakes, and somewhat lighter).

Some Japanese cars have legitimate 'R' types (Skyline GT-R comes to mind).

But other than that, it seems that the 'R' designation is cheapened by overuse from the sticker-mod RiceBoy crowd.

At Denny's clarification.

I would be careful Bear Hunter has that safe and knows how to use what he stores inside it.

But I don't think you're taking into account the titanium muffler bearings they are using these days. Not to mention the driveshaft coolant that will be standard on these rigs.

I just saw on the Speed channel that Audi is unvieling a diesel car to run in the 24 hours of LeMans. If it doesn't wreck, it probably stands a chance of owning the competition just like the GT40s did in the 60s because of the reliable powerplants.

Also, they had a vintage race event on the Speed channel in which there was 5 GT40s. Sexy Sexy.
