Got my plans drawn out for a console for the Ranger.

Question is: Would making the body out of oak (to be finished like furniture) be too old school looking? I have some birch ply sitting around, but it has to be covered some how whereas the oak doesn't have to be.

I can also upholster it, paint it, etc.

I've salvaged the console lid from my flip down console that I took out, so that part of it will be matching the seats.

BTW: My interior is medium prarie tan.

Oak is always in style and finished wood looks the best always.

Go for it.

White oak or red oak?

Quarter-sawn or rift-sawn?

But white oak is nicer. Unless you want to go with Ash which has as similar look but more grain.

Here is a couple of samples of the grain in Ash.

I always say there is nothing like a good piece of ash.

The ash has a nice grain for the wood bed kit, but for a console I would really spend the extra bucks for quarter-sawn oak to minimize the grain a bit. I think for a smaller item like a console the grain of plain-sawn oak is too much. You could also compromise and do rift-sawn to get less grain without the full cost of quarter-sawn.

Did someone say Ash?! As in Ashleigh? Where is she?

Mike-- I don't know what any of these fancy sawing terms mean, but I think the wood would look good (was that a haiku?)

Oak, Ash, Ass, are all very good, but I say Teak! Of course if you have the first mentioned on hand, use what you have! DO IT!

Teak is beautiful but I have a lot of Teak furniture I brought back from Thailand and Ive noticed it keeps cracking as it dries. This is over 18 years now.

Teak needs to be maintained at least once a year. Basically stripped/bleached and oiled regularly. Growing up on the lakes in Michigan, it was my job to maintain the teak on the boats....

Well, here what I ended up making. It is solid oak, but I went ahead and painted it. Covered the top with leftover from my tonneau build. Lots of space for all my crap, a cupholder up off the floor, and my armrest back.

It's frickin all I need.
