| I will say this. If you own a F150 from about 1988 on up to 03 you would be wise to disconnect your Cruise Control switch at the master cylinder and tape up the plug. Ford has been using this same switch for years and i personally think that all the models should be recalled and if not the later models then at least the 97-03's since those seem to be even more so effected. Ford has had problems with there ignition modules doing the same thing is in many of the earlier vehicles and there have been many older truck fires documented that have been caused by this switch.

| American auto makers need to look around and figure out a cost efective measure to fix their cost problems. Shipping labor out of the US and Canada is not the answer...
Eventually we will all be driving Asian vehicles.
Our entire economy is in the toilet....
And they said it didn't suffer after 9-11...

| Yeah, I think that GM and Ford have some issues when it comes to their profit margins compared to Asian car companies. Toyota is tossing around the idea of increasing thier prices to hopefully offset the decline of dropping domesticauto sales.Toyota said that they fear a possible backlash from Americans if GM and/or Ford were to end up going out of buisness (which I don't/can't see happening). But I am glad to see it when one of the car companies says that ther is somehting wrong with their cars and is willing to accept responsiblity for their problem rather than covering it up like so many other companies do. But this is just my opinon(sp).

| I think it may be time to disconnect the ol' cruise. I won't miss it, though. When can you use cruise control in the Seattle metropolitan area anyway?

| I recently replaced the switch on my '97, cost all of $18w/change. Took all of about 5 minutes to replace, and I lost only a few drops of brake fluid. For the peace of mind, even though my truck hasn't been included in the recall, I changed it, and would recommend everyone else do the same.
Red, doesn't matter if you use your cruise control or not, switch is "hot" even when the truck is off. Membrane inside the switch cracks and brake fluid is exposed to live circuit, causing the fire. For the little cost of the switch, why wait.

| I'd be curious about that part as well. If it's available for only $18 I'd get one and install it myself. There's no way I'm leaving my cruise plugged in - not with Ford's record of denying problems (door cracks, cartwheeling Explorers, F-150 Flambe'). And I'm getting tired of having to unplug it everytime I put it in the garage - and then forgetting to plug it in and only realizing it when I'm on the freeway!
Yeah - for $18 I'd do it myself and Ford can kiss my ass. | |

| I just had to replace mine a year and a half ago. I wonder which switch I got. When I bought my truck, the cruise wasn't working, and the mechanic knew right off that it was the problem, since they went out fairly frequently. Who knows?
Mine was $11 with my employee discount, so $18 sounds about right.

| Guess Im going to replace mine tomorrow. 18 dollars to save 125,000 dollars seems like a right decision. Or is that whats called a no brainer in the industry.

| Red, yes, it's a dealer only part at the moment. Sorry I don't have the part number, but make sure you get the new one, cause unfortunately, if you don't ask, they will sell you the old one. Besides part number, way you can tell you get the new one, is it has a different connection the old one, and therefore comes with a 5-6 inch adapter pigtail, and a zip tie. I will see if I can take a picture of knew one this weekend. Have to get camera back from Talley.

| OK Yall. Here is the entire skinny on the recall.
First of all I dont know where the 18 dollar figure came from as I just went to Ford one hour ago and bought the "Recall Kit".
The Kit costs 28 dollars. With tax it came to 29.79 It comes with a wire pigtail about 6 inches long.
The part number for the recall Kit is SW-6350 1L1Z-9F924-AA. The bar code number on the package is 0 31508 47567 0
I had to buy it because F150s is not on the recall yet. Only two of the SUVs are.
Its nothing to install. And its right on top easy to get to. Takes three minutes. Ford wanted 100 dollars to do the job including the part!!!
You just disconnect the wire going to the sensor. Unscrew the sensor and Screw in the new one. You put the 6 inch pigtail on the new sensor and plug your stock plug into the pigtails other end. Here is a shot of the completed work.
As you can see it screws right into the end of the master cylinder. The blue band is on the 6 inch pigtail. Thats what it looks like.
Here is a picture of the old sensor.

| | Lynn, sorry about the price jump, but I promise, I bought the same switch from Ford Dealer in Baytown, TX, and it cost $18.XX before tax. But, you are right with the installation, doesn't take much at all. And, for the peace of mind it offers, that I don't wake up to find my truck on fire, it's money well spent. | |
