Dodge Ram Hemi Hybrid Coming In 2010
It seems Mike Levine from Pickuptrucks has uncovered information from Chrysler regarding their next generation Dodge Ram Hemi Hybrid, stating in a recent interview that the "The hybrid Ram is still on track for 2010". There's no word however whether or not the hybrid option will use the same technology found in the Dodge Durango or Chrysler Aspin SUV's.

| | 2010 Chevy Silverado XFE Now Gets 22 MPG Highway
Chevrolet have updated the 2010 Silverado XFE to get a little better gas mileage, 22 mpg on the highway to be exact. Chevrolet spokesperson, Brian Goebel, spoke with Mike Levine of Pickuptrucks.com, stating "that the increased fuel economy is due to several engineering improvements. The XFE model's 5.3-liter V8 now has variable valve timing, optimized shift pattens in its six-speed transmission, and new tweaks for its Active Fuel Management system that enables the truck to run on four cylinders at cruising speeds for longer".

| | | | AT&T To Purchase New Hybrid And Natural Gas Powered Trucks
According to an article on The Detroit Free Press, AT&T announced they will spend $565 million dollars on 15,000 Ford Motor Company hybrid and natural gas powered vehicles over the next ten years. AT&T will spend $350 million on nearly 8,000 natural gas trucks like the propane powered trucks from Roush.
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson commented on the decision "While there are no easy solutions to the challenges facing our nation, this investment is a first step on our part to help boost other industries while at the same time encouraging wider use and production of efficient vehicles and domestic fuel alternatives".

| | Chrysler LLC Restructuring Plan Includes Other Pickup Trucks
Chrysler LLC's recent restructuring plans that were given to congress include something a bit out of the ordinary, two pickup trucks they have not spoken about yet. One is called the "Lifestyle Truck" and the other "FullSize Pickup". Chrysler's future plans do not include the Dodge Dakota which will be replaced by a unibody "truck" in 2013 similar to the Honda Ridgeline. The full size pickup is slated for 2015 but will probably be released as the next generation Dodge Ram. The same restructuring plan references a second hybrid electric Dodge Ram slated to arrive in 2013 and the first generation Ram 1500 hybrid expected to go on sale in 2010.

| Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrid Pickup Trucks Delivered To Dealerships
The first round of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra hybrid pickup trucks have made delivery to dealerships nationwide. GM spokesperson, Kelly Wysocki commented "Hybrid (Silverados and Sierras) started shipping to dealers in late January...the supply is still limited but we've already sold the first ones". The new pickup trucks feature GM's "two mode" hybrid system, which combines an electrically variable transmission containing two 60 kilowatt electric motors and a multi displacement 6.0 liter V8 motor, which allow the truck to travel up to 25 miles per hour on full electrical power. The hybrid system does come at a premium though, a $3,000 dollar option, starting the 2009 Silverado 1500 hybrid at $38,995 and the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 hybrid at $39,365.

Sales figures from 2008 have come in and hybrid sport utility vehicle purchases have already begun to slow, dropping nearly 10 percent for the year. Toyota ranked number one in hybrid sales for 2008 with 241,000 vehicles sold, Honda as number two with 31,000 vehicles, and Ford in third with 20,000 vehicles sold. Although sales are down, General Motors witnessed a 179 percent growth of their Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade Hybrid SUVs, however no figures were noted by GM.

| | How To Build the Ford H150, an F-150 Converted Into a H1 Hummer
An automotive enthusiast from Montreal, Quebec took his old 1987 Ford F-150 4x4 and 1991 E250 van, and converted it into the "H150", a hybrid F-150 Hummer H1 off-roading machine. Using only common tools which include a 110 volt Lincoln Welder, two 4.5 inch grinders, home made bender, and air tools, the owner has roughly $15,000 cash into the project. That is minuscule in comparison to the $100,000 dollar plus price tag for a "new" Hummer H1. All the metal work was also done by himself. A project like this is a little too large for the MOTORZ garage but definitely proves itself to be one cool build up. Check out the buildup inside.Full Story...

| | Chrysler LLC Says They Will Build Ram Hybrid and Ram Light Duty Diesel
In an interview with Chrysler LLC, Mike Levine of pickuptrucks has confirmed that Chrysler is in fact planning on offering a light duty diesel engine for their Dodge Ram 1500 pickup as well as a Ram Hybrid version. “It still makes sense to offer a light-duty diesel,” said Frank Klegon, Chrysler’s executive vice president of product development. “We think from the total perspective of the regulatory environment, fuel efficiency and other things down the road, diesel is still going to be an element that’s important in this market, and that customers will be attracted to a diesel light-duty truck". In order to develop and build the new light duty diesel engine, Chrysler has teamed up with Cummins who have been producing their current diesel motors since 1988. Fuel efficiency is also noted as a priority for the new motor, over towing performance and other common requests, and the new engine may be produced as a 5.0 liter version. Mr. Klegon also confirmed that Chrysler has promised a hybrid version of the Ram for the 2010 model year and the Ram Hybrid "is still on track". We'll keep you posted Truckblog!

The question this morning is the same that was asked of Peter Gibbons by the Bob twins in "Office Space". "We're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work...so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?". Peter then responds "Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work". Given you are reading this blog right now and happen to not be working at the moment, go ahead and check out our blogs from last week. According to Pickuptrucks, Ford is working on a new F-100 series mid-size pickup truck that would share the new F-150 platform and possibly replace the Ford Ranger. Either way, it's all just speculation, as no official word has come from Ford yet.

This hybrid technology, known as "Hybrid Synergy Drive", is used in the Toyota Prius, Toyota Highlander, and Lexus RX400h SUV's. The justices over ruled Toyota's appeal, and Toyota may have to pay Paice royalties from future vehicle sales. Reported by Detroit News.

In an article by BusinessWeek, Americans are now consuming less gasoline, resulting in less vehicles on the road due to high gasoline prices. In a study conducted in Palm Beach County, Florida, for the past 20 years, workers have been counting vehicles with special sensors to monitor their activity. Nearly every year since the study started, the number of vehicles on the road has risen at least 2 percent annually. However in 2007, traffic levels noticed a decline, and so far for 2008 are down 7.5 percent.Full Story...

Here's your answer. "New Jersey has the nation’s third-lowest gasoline tax, at 14.5 cents a gallon, and it hasn’t gone up in almost two decades".Full Story...

| Electric Fans Help Assist Big Rigs, Improve Gas Mileage
TreeHugger has posted a report by Kambiz Salari, of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, who claims that "for a truck travelling 70 MPH, 65 per cent of the fuel burned is just overcoming aerodynamic drag. Much of that drag come from the air vortices generated behind the vehicle as it moves, that low-pressure zone that bicyclists and hyper-milers love to "draft" in". Kambiz Salari is also applying for a patent on this claim as well, one that will assist in pushing air into the truck, while improving gas mileage and cancelling out the vehicle's draft at the same time.
