Mercedes-Benz ML 450 Hybrid: The perfect hybrid powertrain
More in: Mercedez-Benz, SUV | Comments | Permalink | 13,901 Views

In the search for the optimum hybrid system for the premium motor car, the engineers were already sure of one thing right from the concept phase: a Mercedes-Benz SUV with a hybrid drive would have to share the same typical brand attributes as any other Mercedes vehicle. Essential elements such as the greatest possible active and passive safety, optimum ride comfort and ease of operation, uncompromising reliability over a long period and high-quality workmanship with select materials would have to be on a par with a comparable, conventionally powered standard-production vehicle. And all combined with the greatest possible efficiency. At the same time, the drive system should be testimony to the company's innovative strength and cutting-edge technology.

More in: Chrysler, Dodge | Comments | Permalink | 18,211 Views

Chrysler LLC's recent restructuring plans that were given to congress include something a bit out of the ordinary, two pickup trucks they have not spoken about yet. One is called the "Lifestyle Truck" and the other "FullSize Pickup". Chrysler's future plans do not include the Dodge Dakota which will be replaced by a unibody "truck" in 2013 similar to the Honda Ridgeline. The full size pickup is slated for 2015 but will probably be released as the next generation Dodge Ram. The same restructuring plan references a second hybrid electric Dodge Ram slated to arrive in 2013 and the first generation Ram 1500 hybrid expected to go on sale in 2010.

How To Build the Ford H150, an F-150 Converted Into a H1 Hummer
More in: Ford, Hummer | Comments | Permalink | 29,392 Views

An automotive enthusiast from Montreal, Quebec took his old 1987 Ford F-150 4x4 and 1991 E250 van, and converted it into the "H150", a hybrid F-150 Hummer H1 off-roading machine. Using only common tools which include a 110 volt Lincoln Welder, two 4.5 inch grinders, home made bender, and air tools, the owner has roughly $15,000 cash into the project. That is minuscule in comparison to the $100,000 dollar plus price tag for a "new" Hummer H1. All the metal work was also done by himself. A project like this is a little too large for the MOTORZ garage but definitely proves itself to be one cool build up. Check out the buildup inside.

Chrysler LLC Says They Will Build Ram Hybrid and Ram Light Duty Diesel
More in: Diesel, Dodge, Engine, Fuel | Comments | Permalink | 33,742 Views

In an interview with Chrysler LLC, Mike Levine of pickuptrucks has confirmed that Chrysler is in fact planning on offering a light duty diesel engine for their Dodge Ram 1500 pickup as well as a Ram Hybrid version. “It still makes sense to offer a light-duty diesel,” said Frank Klegon, Chrysler’s executive vice president of product development. “We think from the total perspective of the regulatory environment, fuel efficiency and other things down the road, diesel is still going to be an element that’s important in this market, and that customers will be attracted to a diesel light-duty truck". In order to develop and build the new light duty diesel engine, Chrysler has teamed up with Cummins who have been producing their current diesel motors since 1988. Fuel efficiency is also noted as a priority for the new motor, over towing performance and other common requests, and the new engine may be produced as a 5.0 liter version. Mr. Klegon also confirmed that Chrysler has promised a hybrid version of the Ram for the 2010 model year and the Ram Hybrid "is still on track". We'll keep you posted Truckblog!

The concept of a Plug-in Hybrid has become very popular in the last year. Plug-in Hybrid cars take power off the electric-grid at night when demand is low and use it to charge a large battery. The cars can then operate as pure Electric Vehicles at lower speeds, which dramatically reduces gas consumption and carbon emissions. This is ideal for many of the 30 million fleet vehicles in North America, which operate over shorter distances in cities.

Don't Expect New Dodge Ram Hybrid For A While
More in: Diesel, Dodge, Engine, Fuel | Comments | Permalink | 54,216 Views

The 2009 Dodge Ram pickup is an amazing pickup truck, loaded with state of the art features and offers new options never released on trucks before. What the truck is lacking though (and what Chevrolet and Ford are currently developing and ready to launch soon), is its dual mode hybrid powertrain currently equipped in the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango sports utility vehicles. The new Dodge Ram will also not see a next generation diesel engine, but Dodge promises both will appear "sometime after 2009". The reason they are waiting? We're not quite sure. That question was asked to Dodge Director of Truck Marketing, Joe Veltri, who responded "It's kind of like trying to cover every bet on a roulette wheel" and "No one has the money it takes to cover every possibility at launch. If you want to execute a well-designed product with maximum quality, you have to set some priorities. We set our priorities, and we're pretty happy with the [Ram] product mix".

What will show up under the hood is unknown at this time, but we'll take a guess and say a possible six cylinder or E85 ethanol motor may appear. The Escalade EXT may be on the chopping block as well with the design of a new model.

In an article by Detroit News, automakers are seeking new and different ways to meet the current consumer demand of more fuel efficient vehicles, specifically for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles. Some of those new ideas consist of the basics, which are equipping vehicles with low rolling resistance tires that help achieve an extra mile or two per gallon. One of the first vehicles to see these "energy-saving tires" is the 2009 Ford Escape hybrid SUV.

Automakers Failing To Meet Demand On Hybrid Trucks And SUVs
More in: Chevrolet, Chrysler, General Motors, GMC, SUV, Toyota | Comments | Permalink | 54,367 Views

As greater fuel efficiency becomes increasingly more important to consumers in America, automakers are having a hard time keeping up with the demand for hybrid trucks and SUVs, and apparently it's not the manufacturers faults. According to General Motors' spokesman, John McDonald, "the supply issue isn't entirely because of production limits" but "half of GM dealers opted not to stock the hybrid SUVs. Dealers who wanted them were required to go through special training on servicing the trucks' high-voltage batteries and on explaining the technology to prospective buyers". However dealers are blaming manufacturers for supply shortages.

Get Zapped This Morning? Read This
First and foremost, we at Truckblog hope you all had a great holiday weekend and are now back online to stay logged to the blog!

When you entered the "pit of doom" this morning, also known as your office, cubical or workplace, did you experience an annoying electromagnetic shock from the metal door handle just like Peter Gibbons endured in "Office Space"? If that is the case, well that sucks for you. Maybe you need to not shuffle your feet as much on the carpet. But getting zapped by the door handle is not nearly as bad as the $9 million dollars that was awarded to American Axle's CEO last week or the new laws that ban cell phone usage while driving in California and Washington or the fact that I had to compose a list of 15 hypermiling tricks for your pickup truck to help you save gas because the price of fuel is too high to make ends meet. To solve that problem, check out the MyGallons gas card along with the slew of other blogs from last week.

Although this is not primarily truck news, it definitely serves as a breakthrough in technology and possible innovation for future pickup truck usage. Toyota Motor Corporation have teamed up with Kyocera Corporation to produce solar panels for the next generation Prius hybrid car, which is due for a re-design in 2009. Toyota will install solar panels onto the roof of the "high end" version of the Prius allowing for extra power to be generated and push the vehicles air conditioning system. The new solar panel system will offer a new leap in technology for Toyota and allow for the launch of a third-generation version of the Prius. How Many Minutes Of Actual Work Do You Do?
The question this morning is the same that was asked of Peter Gibbons by the Bob twins in "Office Space". "We're trying to get a feel for how people spend their day at work...so, if you would, would you walk us through a typical day, for you?". Peter then responds "Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work". Given you are reading this blog right now and happen to not be working at the moment, go ahead and check out our blogs from last week.
