Cars, SUVs, and pickups share the road but they don't share the same standard for bumpers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has petitioned the federal government to regulate the bumpers on light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and vans) just as it regulates those on cars. The same bumper rules should apply to all kinds of passenger vehicles. To meet federal rules, car bumpers must be 16 to 20 inches off the ground and limit the amount of damage that can be sustained in a low-speed crash. The idea is to ensure that the bumpers on colliding cars engage, absorbing most of the energy of the impact and keeping damage away from expensive-to-repair parts like fenders, grilles, headlights, and taillights.

Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., announced manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) today for 2009 Tacoma pickup trucks, which range from $15,170 to $27,075. All Tacoma models will now feature Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Traction Control (TRAC) as standard equipment, making Tacoma the latest model to feature Toyota's STAR Safety system consisting of Anti-Lock Brakes, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Brake Assist, VSC, and TRAC.
The California Truck Jamboree Plus & Moto-Palooza show will be arriving at the end of the month. Combining two shows into one, the one day event will be held on June 29th, 2008 at Hidden Valley Park in Irvine, California. The Truck Jamboree Plus will feature hotrods, custom and classic cars, pickup trucks, heavy duty trucks, motorcycles and more. There will also be "Shocker" the monster truck, live music and more. Mike Levine was able to get hold of a spy shot of the 2009 Ford F-450 Harley Davidson Edition pickup truck, complete with blue tribal flames under the paint. Sold at the $60,000 dollar mark, you'll get a chromed grille, custom Harley fender vents, Harley-Davidson cargo box sides, custom emblem for the tail gate, Harley-Davidson wheels, and of course the legendary black Harley-Davidson leather. The new truck is definitely the best yet that Ford has debuted, but I don't know of anyone right now that is in the market for an 8,000 pound truck that pulls off a fuel efficiency rating of 12 miles per gallon. Is this the right timing Ford?

The big shift is on at Ford Motor Company, as the automaker plans to more than double the number – to 1.4 million – of fuel-efficient, 6-speed automatic transmissions in its North American cars and trucks by the end of 2009. The pickup truck features a 120 inch wheel base with a short bed, and unfortunately with the short bed, you will not be able to choose the "RamBox" side storage compartments, as they are an option only in the Crew Cab version.

Lifted on huge Mickey Thompson Baja Claws and packed with a 6.0 liter V8 engine, "Da Hulk" as it's called, also has what seems to be hydraulic cross over steering, a full Dana 60 front axle, leaf springs, a Westin Bull Bar, six Lightforce HID off road lights, flared fenders, chrome side steps, and roll bar. Mudding anyone?

Giving props to DiamondBack, the new Hummer H3T is sporting a HUMMER-branded DiamondBack tonneau cover. This one of a kind H3T cover will be available directly through Hummer dealers when this vehicle is launched in late August, early September. It will also be available through many aftermarket sources and you can choose from the traditional diamond plate style or a new LINE-X XTRA option shown in the pictures.
Mopar, Chrysler LLC’s original equipment parts manufacturer and supplier, announced it has introduced a new 3-year/100,000-mile warranty on its remanufactured powertrain assemblies for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles. Mopar’s new comprehensive warranty on the reman powertrain assemblies covers the costs of all parts and labor. It includes a $75 towing allowance and is transferable. There is also no deductible required.
In an article by The Motley Fool, General Motors is facing very weak truck sales figures, down 20 percent in February alone. With oil prices well over $100 per barrel, automakers in the truck industry are fighting one another for each truck sold. And with heavy hitters like the Toyota Tundra and Ford F-150, the race is becoming tighter and tighter.
In Pro Car Wear Inc developed the automotive industries first, full-function LED and fiber optics taillights for General Motors SUVs, with applications for the Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and GMC Denali.
Ford Motor Company is increasing its current F-150 production, to ensure there will be enough vehicles in supply if demand are to change in the next couple of months before the 2009 F-150 is released public ally. Selling nearly 414,000 F-150s in 2007 alone, Ford currently has roughly 200,000 F-Series pickups in inventory, which is a 96 day supply.

Starting off with the price of oil tipping $110 per barrel, $3.29 dollar average gasoline prices (don't forget the diesel guys at well over $4.00 already!), continued market share decline for domestic automakers, Union employees not agreeing yet on contracts, and more vehicle recalls. However, on a happier note, here's a list of our top stories from last week that you may have missed in the midst of all the action last week.
Woo hoo Jeep lovers! Jeep Performance, which is a division of Mopar, are working on a 2.8 liter diesel engine swap kit for your Jeep. Everything needed will be included in the kits, "including a stand-alone wiring harness and non-EGR motor!". Apparently the Jeep Liberty diesel engines had problems with their exhaust gas recirculation systems, so Jeep has responded with a kit that will replace the Liberty diesel engine, as well as a drop in kit for all other Jeep platforms. Pickuptruck.com have posted their review of the 2008 Dodge Dakota as well, although the results were not so satisfying. "Although the Dakota has an obvious edge with the V8 offering, fingers point to the Nissan Frontier for all-around small truck satisfaction in this comparison". Ford Motor Company has been ordered to pay out $82.6 Million dollars to Benetta Buell-Wilson, now paralyzed from the waist down, for when her 1997 Ford Explorer rolled 4 times during an accident and the roof had collapsed, which severed her spinal cord.

Mike Levine of Pickuptruck.com released his opinion today of the TRD Supercharged 2008 Toyota Tacoma, which dials in at a price tag of nearly $37,000 dollars, a bit steep for a mid-size truck. The supercharger option sets you back a good $4,000, and with gas prices at over $4 per gallon, I do not think customers will be requesting that option all that much. The estimated EPA gas mileage numbers for the Tacoma are 18 miles per gallon in the city, which is not that much better from its bigger brother, the full-size Tundra at 14 miles per gallon.

GM Holden’s global design capability was showcased today on the world stage when GMC took the covers off a stunning concept vehicle at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. The GMC Denali XT was designed and constructed at GM Holden’s design centre in Port Melbourne, Victoria. GMC drew upon General Motors’ global resources and expertise in Australia to produce the show stopper.

Toyota Australia will unveil the supercharged TRD HiLux at the Brisbane International Motor Show ahead of its launch in the second quarter of 2008. Queensland manager Sean Hanley said the TRD HiLux had completed all testing and would begin production in the second half of February.

Yahoo Finance reported this morning, that Ford has begun to eliminate gas caps from all of their new models because "People just don't like the cap", stated Matt O'Leary, a Ford Chief Engineer. Xsighting Lighting have released their GMT800 HID light kits for the 1999 to 2002 Silverado, 2000 to 2006 Suburban, and 2000 to 2006 Tahoe. The Xenon HID technology provides over two times the light output of factory head lamps and are street legal. The kit includes one set of headlamps that replace the factory OEM's, and utilize the exsisting vehicle wiring connections for installation.

Chrysler LLC announced today that they will offer a new chrome grille for their Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Wranger Unlimited vehicles. The new chrome grille "allows customers to personalize their Jeep to make a bolt statement". It also includes a Jeep emblem, hood seal, fasteners and installs in less than 20 minutes. The price of the new grille will cost you $299 and can be purchased through Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealerships across the country. Better yet, all of Mopar accessories are covered under Chrysler's 3-year or 36,000 mile new vehicle limited warranty. How's that for "pimping your auto"?

I found this thing on The Car Connection website and man, is it ugly or what? It looks like a Porsche Cayenne that mated with a Lamborghini front end or a lifted Lambo on 26 inch rims. Looks aside, the engine for this sucker is rumored to be the V-10 from the Gallardo, but the Cayenne's 4.5 liter V-8 is also available. There's also a potential diesel version in the works, rumored to be a 5.9 liter Audi V-12 TDI. Even if Lamborghini decides to use a killer engine in their SUV, they should also consider re-designing the vehicle body since it's just plain ugly.

Well, yesterday was that day, and it was horrid enough where I thought instantly, "beerblog status". While on my adventure to a local San Diego beach, I happened to park near a very customized vehicle that seemed to have been inspired by MTV's hit ghetto fab automotive customization show, "Pimp My Ride".
