General Motors And Ford Merger Considered By GM
More in: Ford, General Motors | Comments | Permalink | 22,270 Views

In recent meetings at General Motors, executives have tossed around the idea of a GM and Ford merger but also noted the company (Ford) has similar problems just like General Motors does. "I don't think a merger is likely," says David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research. "But you'll see a lot of options considered if they think bigger problems will come by". Analysts say that a General Motors and Ford merger would have "huge pros and cons", combining the two giants into one with more than $350 billion dollars in revenue...

If you want recent proof of this, one doesn't need to look much further than Friday's Beerblog post featuring customizable MP3 sounds for your car alarm. Ford's new Sync system features technology such as Bluetooth, voice-commands, steering wheel controls and the ability to plug USB devices right into the center console for use with the vehicles audio system - pretty cool stuff!

LED Technology - Advances in Automotive Use
More in: Exterior | Comments | Permalink | 55,946 Views

2005 F150 with aftermarket LED tail lightsIt's no secret that I am an avid fan of LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). As a matter of fact, one of my first posts as a Truckblog blogger - was on LEDs. I think that anyone who is a fan of technology, can see the benefit of bringing this form of lighting into the automotive market.

LEDs are super bright, last thousands of hours and can take abuse that normal filament bulbs cannot. One aspect of a LED that further separates them from their filament bulb counterparts, is that they are available in a variety of colors. Some manufacturers, such as Ford, offer the capability of changing your dash light color - which is the case in the new style Mustangs. LEDs make driving at night and in bad weather safer, but what other advantages are there?

LED Third Brake Lights by Recon
More in: Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Safety | Comments | Permalink | 299,149 Views

RECON LED 3rd Brake LightLED third brake lights have mostly been limited to the Ford community, due to the 2001-2004 Lightning. F-150 owners saw that this stock Lightning light would fit their trucks and went crazy ordering them. Heck, even I bought one and took it a step further by painting it to match my trucks body color. With the introduction of the latest body style F-150, Ford owners lost an opportunity to mod. Thankfully, RECON truck accessories filled a niche for truck owners of most makes!

Maintenance Week: Scheduling
More in: Engine | Comments | Permalink | 46,470 Views

Your vehicles maintenance is extremely important if you want it to last. Every manufacturer posts a schedule of regular intervals that vehicle maintenance should be performed. Since many of you still have that owners manual wrapped in the OEM cellophane, we thought we would find a generic maintenance schedule for you.

  • Engine Oil and Oil filter Change - Every 3,000 miles
  • Lube steering linkage and driveline - Every 5,000 miles
  • Air Filter - Inspect every 5,000 Miles and replace as needed (Usually @ 15,000 miles)
  • Tire Rotation - Every 6,000 Miles
  • Windshield Wipers - Replace Annually
  • Engine Coolant - Flush and Change every 30,000 miles
  • Transmission Fluid & Filter Change - Every 30,000 miles
  • Timing Belt - Replace at 60,000 to 100,000 miles (when equipped)
  • Belts and Hoses - Replace at 60,000 to 100,000 miles

Again, this is just a generic chart of suggested intervals. Some people don't change their oil every 3,000 miles (personally I go 5,000 miles as I run a synthetic oil in my truck) this is just a suggested guideline for when and where you should be doing maintenance. If you're not sure, then crack open that owners manual as the full schedule will be printed in it.

    Maintenance Week: Filters
More in: Engine | Comments | Permalink | 54,551 Views

Now we have talked about changing your oil and maintaining your tires, but we haven't touched on your vehicles filters yet. Notice we said "Filters" because there are several that need to be considered. Of course there is your air filter which is commonly recommended to be replaced every 10,000-15,000 miles or roughly twice a year, but there is also an oil filter and a fuel filter that need to be replaced and depending on your truck, their might be more than that.

    Maintenance Week: Tires
More in: Tires | Comments | Permalink | 59,519 Views

This is one of the more easier things you can keep maintained yourself, however it's often one of the most overlooked items as well. Maintaining the correct tire pressure in your cars tires is not only makes your car safer to drive but can decrease tire wear and increase fuel mileage.

    Tire Inflation
Tire inflation is key to maintaining the your tires normal wear patterns and increasing fuel economy. Judging the tire pressure by sight alone isn't good enough as there is very little difference to the eye between a tire running 20 psi vs. a tire running 30 psi however the tires rated load would be decreased by one third at 20 psi.

    Maintenance Week: Motor Oil
More in: Engine | Comments | Permalink | 58,660 Views

Whether you drive a pimped out H2 rolling a set of 26" shoes or you have your dad's old 76 Pickup with the rusted out bed, they both have something in common and that is that without lubrication, their engine won't survive. Keeping your vehicle lubricated isn't difficult to do and there certainly isn't a shortage of oil manufacturers but there are several key differences you should be aware of before you slide under your pickup to change the oil.

    Synthetic Oils vs. "Fossil" Oils
Not all oils are created equally. Synthetic oil, just like regular oil, is designed to cool and lubricate engines with a couple of key differences. standard or fossil oil is isolated from natural crude oil and the impurities are removed. what's left are the liquids with the best lubrication and cooling properties. synthetics are carefully engineered using base chemical compounds to provide superior cooling and lubrication often ending up with an oil that will easily out perform regular natural oils across the board and last three times long doing so. Now, we could easily take a week to explain the virtues and differences between synthetic and regular oils, but we're not going to do that right now.
