The North American Car/Truck Of the Year award has stumbled upon the same murky waters as the rest of the automotive industry. With the ever expanding line of SUV and crossover models, it has become difficult for them to truly define a truck standard for their award.
The 2011 finalists were a prime example of the problem… All three of them were crossovers, with the 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque being crowned the winner. With all that being said, the powers that be took a step back and realized that it really didn’t fit the true definition of truck. So, they have decided to rename the North American Car/Truck Of the Year to the North American Truck/Utility vehicle Of the Year. NACTUOY doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue quite the same, but it does bridge the gap that has been widening for several years now. Or does it? Do crossovers and SUVs truly belong in the truck category? Personally, I think that is a debate that needs to be carried out a little further first.
