Next gen Land Rover Defender to be built in India, still looks like a toy

[ 0 ] January 26, 2012 |

We all knew this day would most likely come. Many denied it, or flat out pretended the situation didn’t exist. Some scoffed at the idea and lived in denial. However, it looks like the day has come when the Land Rover will be building a vehicle in India.

Word has it that the next generation Defender will be built at Tata’s Pune automotive plant in India. Slated to go into production for the 2015 model year, the new Land Rover Defender will be a huge litmus test to see just how well the folks in India can keep up the heritage and prestige of the Land Rover brand. Yes, we know the new Defender looks a bit like… well, a Tonka truck really. And yes, we know it is not Land Rover’s flag ship vehicle. However, a huge amount of success or a ton of ‘I told ya so!’ is riding on this. You can bet the rest of the automotive world will be watching with bated breath. No pressure Tata… no pressure.
