Porsche builds its 100,000th Cayenne, poses for group photo
Since the Cayenne debuted in 2002, it has been a decent selling staple for Porsche. The second generation Cayenne definitely improved on the original, and since its launch in 2010, sales have taken off.
The original Cayenne sold almost 360,000 units in its first generation run from 2002 to 2009. The second generation is on track to eclipse that total by the end of its third year. The Leipzig plant, where the Cayenne is produced, also celebrated its 10th anniversary. Sales have been so good that the Leipzig plant is in the process of starting a third production shift to help meet demand. With the Cajun soon to be ramping up production along side the Cayenne, the Leipzig plant has become a solid anchor for Porsche, and has made the rest of the SUV community take them very seriously from now on instead of treating them as a niche line.
