Alternative Aerodynamic Camper Shell Helps Increase Pickup Truck Fuel Efficiency

[ 0 ] August 5, 2008 |

An avid Ecomodder member by the name of Brett Herndon has created an alternative aerodynamic product for pickup trucks, specifically his F-150, to help cut the drag ratio caused by an open bed and increase the F-150′s fuel efficiency by as much as $455 annually. “With pickup trucks, the big, open bed is a big no-no,” Herndon said. “If you can cover it even with a bed cover, you’re going to improve fuel efficiency,” Herndon stated. Made of fiberglass and plastic, Brett also designed the cover to convert into a camper shell. Brett has achieved a fuel economy increase of 4 miles per gallon from the stock 18 miles per gallon average to 22 with the cover. His combined mileage rose nearly 2 miles per gallon from 16, to 17.7. No pricing has been announced yet.
